They attempted to negotiate with the attackers, and in their public statements, they indicated that the data that had been encrypted was “important to some of the academic work we pursue as a university serving the public good”. This statement hints at the possibility that ongoing research, potentially even related to the COVID pandemic, was put at risk.

Eventually, to protect the work and privacy of its students and faculty, the university decided to pay a sum of $1.14 million. While this was less than the initial amount demanded by the hackers, it was still a significant sum, demonstrating the grave financial implications that such breaches can have on institutions, not to mention the reputational damage and inconvenience caused.

After the payment, the decryption key was provided and UCSF could retrieve its data. But the event served as a wake-up call, not just for UCSF, but for universities worldwide. The incident highlighted the importance of maintaining robust and ever-vigilant cybersecurity measures, a lesson that remains relevant to this day.

More Victims

In May 2020, MSU also fell prey to a ransomware attack, just a few weeks prior to the UCSF event. The culprits were, again, the NetWalker hacker group. They infiltrated MSU’s systems and threatened to leak students’ records and financial documents unless a ransom was paid within a week.

Interestingly, unlike UCSF, Michigan State University chose not to pay the ransom. They were firm in their public announcement, stating that they would not engage with the hackers and were working with law enforcement authorities to resolve the situation.

True to their word, the hackers began posting stolen files on their blog, which they labeled as “secret data.” This leak forced the university to scramble to mitigate the damage, both to its systems and to its reputation. It led to a lot of concern and unease among students, faculty, and other staff members.

Like the UCSF attack, the MSU incident highlighted the cybersecurity vulnerabilities faced by educational institutions and the potential implications of these attacks. It showed that it’s not always about whether or not to pay the ransom – the mere breach of security can lead to significant disruption and reputational damage, further underscoring the importance of proactive and robust cybersecurity measures in higher education institutions.
